Relief Printmaking with Hal Papcun

Students learn the fundamentals of relief printmaking, including image planning, carving techniques, and printing methods using either a press or hand-printing techniques. Emphasis is placed on thinking in reverse when designing imagery, safe and effective carving practices, proper ink preparation and rolling, and achieving consistent pressure. This course is designed to make relief printmaking accessible for a wide range of ages and skill levels, enabling students to continue creating prints independently without requiring access to professional equipment.

Hal Papcun
Hal Papcun is a multidisciplinary artist, illustrator, and educator based in Traverse City, Michigan. Known for his intricately detailed prints and illustrations… and the signature hidden snails tucked throughout his work! Hal earned a BFA in Fine Arts Illustration from Northern Michigan University and has been a practicing educator and professional illustrator since 2016. Hal teaches printmaking at Northwestern Michigan College and regularly leads classes and workshops in the region.
