Sally Rose
Did I choose papermaking as my medium, or did it choose me? All I know, every time I cut back something in the garden, I think THAT stuff could make cool paper…
I grew up in Colorado, surrounded by family members who were handy with “making.” Dad stamped leather in a saddle shop, Mom made our clothes. Both taught the value of making do and making beautiful. I think that’s partly why I can see the potential in natural materials. Sometimes the materials are funny—not cherished as traditional art materials at all! Twigs and veggies! I use abaca and flax pulp to make paper that’s high shrinkage so I can “pulp weld” organic materials into sculptural forms.
Retired after serving as head of the fiber arts program at Central Michigan University for thirty three years, I call Mt. Pleasant home.
