Beginning Encaustic:  Come learn the fascinating art of encaustic painting in this beginner’s class. Students will work with pigmented hot wax, along with various other mixed media items.  Photographers and oil painters will particularly appreciate this unique spin on creating artwork (photography can be incorporated into the work or adhered to the wax, for example). But even beginner artists will enjoy this process.

All Levels - ages 14 +

Supplies are included.  (But students are encouraged to bring small/flat ephemera such as stamps, photos, etc. to add to their work.)

Wendy Wernet

Wendy Wernet is a multi-media artist who has shown her work in numerous exhibitions throughout the region. She began in photography, then found encaustic art by accident, and immediately became intrigued with the medium. To this day, she is still discovering new techniques and possibilities. Her work has been shown in numerous galleries throughout Michigan, and she has held workshops in photography and encaustic for years at Oliver Art Center and other regional art centers.

Artist Statement:
My art involves a sense of fluidity. At times, letting the wax evolve on its own, staying a mystery until it is completed, becoming a long lasting, one of a kind creation. It also involves a rich color palette to create depth and luminosity. Being colorblind, I strive to make the colors vibrant enough to be seen and appreciated. Encaustic painting has such a versatility, it creates a curiosity and a fascination to experiment. When I teach it, I love seeing students becoming completely focused and enamored with it.
