Class Description and Supply List: Abstract Techniques to Improve your Paintings: 2-Day Watercolor Workshop with Rocco Pisto

Class | Available

The most effective way to truly understand watercolor is first to learn the properties of the paint and how each color combines to create new and unique colors.  In order to do that, we'll be working abstractly, so the focus is on the tools and techniques and not on the subject matter and composition.  We will be exploring the medium itself and some tips and tricks to help make your paintings sing.  We'll also work with a variety of brushes to learn different brush strokes, various wash techniques, color blending, wet-on-wet painting, dry brush painting, detail tape and resists, and experiment a bit with india ink.

  • Supply list (to be purchased by student prior to the start of class):

The tools we are using in class can be purchased from Cheap Joe's Art Stuff, Dick Blick Art Supplies, Michael's, and Amazon.

Pisto, Rocco
Rocco Pisto

Rocco Pisto earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Eastern Michigan University in 1974 and

has been painting for over five decades. He is the current President Emeritus of the Michigan

Watercolor Society and holds both a Signature Member and Great Lakes Fellow designation in

that group. He also holds membership in the National Watercolor Society, International Society

Artist Statement:

As a painter for over fifty years, I never tire of the experimental process of starting a piece and

solving the design problems along the way to make it a finished work. Spontaneity, discovery,

individuality, analysis, visual balance, contrast, and contradiction all summarize my thought

process. I find that no two paintings are the same, and I cannot paint the same thing twice. My

technique of painting abstractly by dripping, pouring, splashing, and brushing paint allows the

work to evolve until it meets my criteria of what constitutes a successful piece of art. The

adrenaline of marking pristine, white Arches Watercolor paper with paint is a euphoric process

that never loses its newness or interest.
