Spoon Carving with Greenwood

Workshop | Available

Make a hand-carved spoon using traditional carving tools and uncured “green” wood sourced from the ESSA campus. Start by learning how to identify and then harvest appropriate material for your spoon directly from ESSA’s 70 acre campus. Experience using a shave horse, hand axes, and draw knives, while learning about different types of cuts and grain direction. Joe, a recipient of the Arkansas Arts Council Folklife Award, will share his love of woodworking and guide you through hand-carved spoon making.

Joe Doster

Joe (Huntsville, AR) started woodworking sitting on his rear. As a kid, his Dad would often say 'I need your help.' 'Sit on this board while I cut it.' Joe has worked wood all his life. He has travelled the juried art road in the 80’s and 90’s with his furniture and taught woodworking and furniture making for 21 years at secondary and post-secondary levels. Now retired, he finds that he misses the classroom and his love for sharing craftsmanship.
