S26-42 The Story of “The Star-Spangled Banner”

Class | Registration opens 3/2/2026 9:00 AM EST

If you have ever been to a U.S. sporting event, you know the routine. People stand, some place right hands over their hearts, men take their hats off etc. Then, six of the most recognizable musical notes in American culture are played, and the crowd belts out the first five words: “O Say Can You See…”. In this year of the celebration of our 250th anniversary, the history of how our National Anthem came to be, carries even more significance. This course will take you through the controversy of “The Flag”, to the battlefield, to the writing of the poem and then its transition to those first five words
