CLOISONNE ENAMELING WITH A TWIST
Instructor:      Beth deVitry
Learn the art of forming fine silver wires on enamel to create patterns and cells of
transparent color. Students will learn to create detail by texturing their silver base,
adding foil and using P3 and mason stains. Additional skills learned will be creating the
perfect canvas (the silver base), fusing a frame to silver (champlevé) sifting, wet
packing, grinding and finishing. Various troubleshooting and setting techniques will also
be discussed. Students will come home with at least 1 finished piece. This class is
appropriate for beginners however some experience is helpful. Cloisonné with a Twist
Class Outline

Day 1 Introduction to equipment, safety and tool kit. Design: discussion of design and
wirework Cut and prepare blanks Demonstration of flashing metal &ampx; fusing a frame.

Day 2 Texturing and forming the silver Sifting demonstration for our “canvas” Wire
bending techniques Discussion about color and demonstration of wet packing.

Day 3 Demonstration of details: foils, mason stains Demonstration of grinding, polishing
and finishing.

Day 4 We will discuss any other techniques students may be interested in. Discussion
of setting techniques, many samples to look at!

Day 5 Clean up and finishing projects.

Prerequisite: Sawing skills are helpful but not mandatory

Beth deVitry

Beth deVitry earned her BFA at Maryland Institute College of Art and then apprenticed as a traditional goldsmith. After years working as a
jewelry designer in the retail world, she turned her focus to enameling and started her own business full time. Beth has exhibited in
international curated exhibits, craft shows and galleries. In 2024 she won an award in Alchemy 7, The Enamelist Society Biennial
International Juried Exhibition. Her work is published in “Grains of Glass, A Global Community of Enamel Artists” by Trish White. Beth
currently resides in Lancaster PA where she teaches and continues to explore enamel.
