OPALS II: BOULDER OPAL & BEYOND

INSTRUCTOR: JEFF HUNTER

This class focuses on cutting boulder opal. This opal is found in Australia. This precious opal is lodged in a matrix of ironstone, sunstone, siltstone and/or clay. This often creates a spiderweb like pattern that pops against the matrix. The class includes the process for stabilizing boulder opal should the stone require it. Students will cut the stone using lapidary grinding wheels. Additionally, students will learn carving and polishing techniques using Nova tips and a flex shaft. Be sure to bring a flex shaft if you have one. Nova and polishing tips will be provided, along with 10 boulder opal stones to be cut, stabilized, and carve.

Jeff Hunter

Jeff Hunter has been a lapidarist for over a 15 years. Early in his career he was introduced to boulder opal and was bitten by the opal bug. Once bitten he decided to devote his lapidary career to the study and cutting of boulder opals. A few years ago he had the opportunity to visit and stay at a boulder opal mine in Koroit. Jeff came to the William Holland School to expand his knowledge and skills in cutting and polishing opals from around the world. He know shares his knowledge and skills with others by teaching opals here at the William Holland School of Lapidary Arts.
