A MOKUME GANE PERFECT PAIR: FUSING & CHISEL PATTERNING
INSTRUCTOR: ANNE WOLF
Mokume Gane is an ancient Japanese technique that uses fused layers of different metals to form unique organic patterns. In this class we’ll be combining the efficiency and repeatability of electric kiln diffusion bonding with traditional Japanese chisel patterning - the best of both worlds! Students will create a mokume gane billet from scratch by fusing, then forging and rolling it down to sheet. Using chisels handmade specifically for mokume gane, students will carve their own intricate and unique patterns into their billets, then forge them back flat to lock the designs into the sheet. This workshop is a great follow on for those who have taken any of Anne’s online mokume gane patterning classes, but it is also open to those new to mokume gane. Participants can expect to create multiple patterned samples and/or finished jewelry/metalwork depending on their interests and experience level. Detailed handouts including step-by-steps and equipment sources will be provided.
