BASKETRY I

INSTRUCTOR: MELISSA RICE

In this class, students will learn the basics of reed basket weaving, including materials preparation, different weaving techniques, terminology, use of basketry tools, and how to read a basket pattern. Students will also learn how to add color and texture to their baskets using dyed reed and other materials. The objective is for students to experience weaving a variety of styles, sizes, and shapes of baskets.

Each student will complete three baskets, with an opportunity to create additional baskets for an extra fee. (Many students will complete four baskets during the course.) Pictured is a sample of one of the baskets we will make.

The class fee includes materials for the first three baskets, patterns, handouts, and the use of all the tools needed to create the baskets.

Class Fee: $225, includes three baskets.

Est. Materials Fee: $35-$55 for each additional basket

Melissa Rice started her basket weaving journey in 2017, with her first class at William Holland. What began as a simple hobby blossomed into a passion for creating beautiful and functional baskets. She has spent the last seven years taking classes and exploring new techniques and designs. Melissa makes each basket unique with her colorful and decorative touches. Her baskets reflect a love for tradition and creativity. She finds joy in turning natural materials into works of art.

Melissa, a retired Pre-K teacher, resides in South Florida with her husband, Dave. She is Mom to four grown children and Grandma to nine grandkids and loves spending lots of time with her family. When she is not weaving or busy with family, she enjoys reading fantasy books, hiking in the great outdoors, and photography.
