METAL CLAY: STONE SETTING IN SILVER CLAY

INSTRUCTOR: STARR PAYNE

AUGUST 24, 2025

In this class students will learn several techniques for setting cabochons and gemstones into metal clay. Creating bezels and prong settings which can be incorporated into a piece either before or after firing the metal clay.   We will discuss which stones can be fired in place and the best methods for incorporating non-fireable stones into your metal clay designs.   In addition, students will also be able to work with dichroic glass and stone inlay if they like.

Silver metal clay is micro-fine particles of silver in a claylike binder that can be cut, formed, and textured.  When fired with a torch or kiln, the binder burns away and what is left is fine silver.

The class fee includes enough silver metal clay to complete several projects, such as earrings pendants, and brooches.  A cabochon along with fine silver bezel strip and wire are also included in the class fee, along with handouts and consumables along with the use of an instructor’s tool kit.  Additional metal clay and materials will be available for purchase and the prices are included in the Estimated Materials Fee.

Class Fee: $250

Est. Materials Fee: $25 - $200

Prerequisites: Some experience with metal clay preferred, but not required.

I think I have always been a creator.  Some of my earliest memories are of making things and always wanting to try the latest art or craft project.  I began making beaded jewelry in 1995, and after moving to Florida, I continued developing my metalsmithing skills with the Florida Society of Goldsmiths.  In 2001, I discovered Metal Clay and it has been the main focus of my metalwork since then.   I hold Metal Clay Certifications from Rio Grande and Art Clay Silver and PMC Connection.  While I work predominately in silver metal clay, the bronze and copper clays are beginning to show up more in my work.   I love to work with Metal Clay, the feel of it, and how it can be textured and shaped into beautiful designs and pieces of wearable art.   I continue to be interested in all forms of craft, including enameling, glass fusing and metalsmithing, expanding my knowledge and adding to my jewelry designs.

I have been teaching weekly Metal Clay classes for the last few years at the Lafayette Park Arts and Crafts Center in Tallahassee, Florida and have also taught Metal Clay classes for the Florida Society of Goldsmiths, Tallahassee Makers Space and at the River’s Edge and AHA Galleries.

My work is currently being shown at the Wiregrass Artist Cooperative in Thomasville, GA.  River’s Edge Gallery in Apalachicola, FL, and at the AHA Gallery in Havana, FL.
