SILVER I

INSTRUCTOR: KIM ST. JEAN

 

In this class students will be taught the fundamental skills needed for them to advance in the wonderful world of silver jewelry fabrication. First, we discuss and implement safety requirements in using the torch, jewelers saw, files, necessary chemicals/compounds, buffing/grinding machines, tumblers, rolling mill and flex shafts. Skills taught will include palion, sweat, pick, wire and chip soldering techniques. Proper sawing, filing, hammering, texturing, stamping and bezel stone setting will be demonstrated. Patinas and polishing will put the finishing touches on your pieces. The first 3 projects are guided step by step. These first projects are planned to foster skills that will be invaluable to your future silversmithing experiences formulating a solid base of experience. No projects are included in the class kit fee due to the ever-fluctuating cost of silver. All project materials will be provided by the instructor at fair market value. Basic tools are provided, although you are welcome to bring your own. The instructor will provide educational material, saw blades, solder, files, fluxes, patina, 3M radial, Cratex, etc. Instructor will have additional tools that may be needed. After the first 3 projects are completed, students may proceed to their own designs with instructor approval and supervision. Additional materials will be available at fair market value such as silver, wire, and cabochons. Optivisors may be necessary for close up work and close-toed shoes are mandatory. Long hair must be worn up or back. Expect to have fun and learn in a pressure-free and self- paced environment!

Kim St. Jean

Kim St. Jean is an award-winning instructor, author, and jewelry designer. Following 10 years as a public school teacher, she has been teaching jewelry classes for over 20 years. Kim has been published in numerous magazines and books. She has appeared on several beading/craft television programs including Jewelry TV and Beads Baubles & Jewels. Kim also has written 3 books and has over 30 instructional DVD’s and on-line courses available. Predominantly at www.wirejewelry.com  Kim’s home base is in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where she and her husband, Norm, own Studio St. Jean. Kim, Norm, and their son Chase spend much of the year traveling across the country teaching classes at bead shows, jewelry schools, guilds, clubs, studios, and stores.
