SILVER I CONCEPTS
INSTRUCTOR: LAURA COX
This class will cover the basic techniques and concepts of working with sterling and fine silver including safety and proper use of tools, fabrication, as well as sawing, filing, forming, hammering, stamping, annealing, and soldering (paste, wire, and chip), pickling, with finishing by oxidizing, polishing, and finally cabochon stone setting. Techniques will be discussed and applied through projects including post earrings, pendant with cabochon, soldered chain for either a bracelet or necklace, and a ring with a cabochon. If time allows, subsequent projects will be explored based on newly learned skills from the week and students’ creativity and ability. If you have your own cabochons, feel free to bring them. There will be some to purchase. The school supplies the basic tools, but you may bring your own if you prefer. We suggest bringing an Opti visor if you have one. Class Fee includes the first project and expendable items such as flux, solder, sandpaper, saw blades, patinas, polishes, solder brick, and printed materials. The cost of silver will be based on the market price at the time of the class and all projects will be sold as project kits. Closed toe shoes are required.
