SILVER I

INSTRUCTOR: BARBARA FIELDS

This class is for the beginning Silver Student and Students who have taken previous Silver I classes and either need a refresher or are trying to gain more skills to be able to qualify for a Silver II Class. This is a very structured class, where the next project will rely on the skills you learned from the previous project. Safety is a primary concern and will be discussed before anything else.

We will start the class making a bracelet, which will cover the topic of annealing. The next item is a closed back pendant, that will be constructed with the stone and silver materials of your choice. We’ll go over measuring the stone and how to choose the bezel material that will work best for your stone. Solder will be explained and demonstrated. The third project is an open back pendant. This setting allows the light to be seen through your stone, which will show the beauty of the interior of the stone. Agates and quartz types of minerals work best with this setting. The skills you used for the open back pendant will now be used to make a spinner ring. Additional projects may be completed as time permits, including a ring with a stone and a bracelet with a stone. If you finish the required projects, you will have the opportunity to make other projects on your wish list.

Students may supply their own stones and cabochons. I will supply all the materials, and other required necessary items to complete your projects. SILVER IS SEPARATE

Extra materials and other items will be available for sale in addition to the cost of materials used. Good motor skills and vision are required since we will be working with small objects and hard to see processes. OptiVisors or other vision aids can be used if desired. Leather Apron if possible.

Class Fee: $100

Est Materials Fee: $150 – 300+ (In addition to class fee)

Prerequisite: No previous experience required.

Barbara Fields

I began my adventure in Silversmithing in 2005, in Nashville, TN. Thanks to Mid-Tennessee Gem & Mineral Society. They offer classes in stone cutting, cabochons, and Silver Smithing. I started with a Lapidary Class and quickly moved into the Silver Jewelry Class. After I advanced in skills, and the demand had increased, I was asked to be an instructor. I have taken Silver Fabrication with several instructors at William Holland through the years, and have dabbled in several other aspects in the Jewelry Arts, as well as other artistic pursuits. My classes are structured for the beginning student, and for building their skills to pursue their endeavors after the class has ended. I prefer keeping everyone on the same projects, so we can learn from each other’s experience, until they are confident enough to work independently on their own projects. Students typically make five or more finished pieces and can expect to spend $150 to $300 or more, depending on materials used in class or purchased to take home to continue their journey into the world of silversmithing.
