SILVER II: SETTING FACETED STONES

INSTRUCTOR: DEBRA COBIA

Do you love the sparkle of faceted stones as a stand alone or accent to your pieces? Are you uncertain of the ways such stones might be used and set to their best advantage? The purpose of this class is to learn at least five ways to set faceted stones.

This is a techniques oriented class to build sample settings using silver and synthetic stones. However, if time permits students may complete at least one piece of wearable jewelry so feel free to bring faceted stones appropriate gauges of silver for the type of object you wish to fabricate.

Class participants may expect to develop knowledge and skill in executing the following types of settings:

  • Bezel settings with inner bezels for oval and square stones
  • Tube Settings, including how to measure for and cut your seats with special stone setting burs
  • Combination bezel/prong settings
  • Simple basket settings
  • Flush settings

Participants should:

  1. Have solid torch control with the ability to direct heat that will achieve a specific outcome;
  2. Be able to use a calculator, ruler, and caliper;
  3. Be proficient with saw, files, pliers, and flush cutters.

Class fee does not included in your William Holland registration, includes materials and stones for tube, prong, flush, step bezel, and basket settings: some tool use, handouts, solder and other consumables.  And, the materials for two setting tools. If you want to incorporate one of the settings in a finished piece, bring your own silver. A suggested tools list will be available at debracobia.com after February 1, 2025.

Class Fee: $200.

Prerequisites: Intermediate Soldering and Torch Skills
Est Materials Fee: $ 0+

As a jewelry artist, I use traditional metalsmithing techniques to create wearable art. My work is characterized by clean, uncluttered lines and enhanced by the use of texture and color.  Having lived on or near water for most of my life, I am strongly influenced by the colors and textures found in and around lakes, rivers, and mountains. I currently divide my time between Carrollton, Georgia and Cedar Bluff, Alabama. I am a founding member of the Blue Door Gallery, an artist cooperative in Carrollton.  I am a member of the Carrollton Artists Guild, the Metal Arts Guild of Georgia, and the Florida Society of Goldsmiths. I have been teaching at William Holland for approximately 15 years. Samples of my work may be seen at debracobia.com.
