FACETING II
INSTRUCTOR: DAVE MCGREGOR
This class will focus on how to establish the correct outline for rectangular designs. Rectangular designs have a length to width ratio not equal to 1 and establishing an accurate stone outline is best done with the Centerpoint Angle Method (CAM). Since Tangent Ratio Scaling is closely linked to CAM, it will be included in the class discussion. Charts provided to each student will show the derivation of both Tangent Ratio Scaling and Centerpoint Angle Method. Each student will also be provided sample Excel spreadsheets showing the formulas needed so that the student can create spreadsheets on his or her own computer for future use. The instructor will recommend that each student cut the same design for the first, class stone. While the instructor will also have additional designs from which to choose for a second or third stone, students may cut a design of their choice.
Students are encouraged to have taken a Faceting I Class and be familiar with machine use, lap care, reading a faceting diagram, dopping and stone transfer. Each student will receive a piece of faceting rough for the first stone, a lint-free cloth, an LED flashlight, a Sharpie pen, a heat sink cloth, a table of subsurface damage depths and other miscellaneous information. The instructor will provide pre-polish and polishing laps for students to use during class. Website resources and the computer program, Gem Cut Studio will also be discussed.
Faceting machines are provided for use by William Holland but a student who has one may bring his/her own machine. Students are strongly encouraged to bring an Optivisor or equivalent magnification device. Each student should be able to complete 1 stone during the class and possibly two or three. Students may bring in their own rough if they so choose but nothing harder than quartz, a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. Additional rough will be available for purchase.
This is expected to be a week of fun learning about obtaining an accurate outline for a non-round faceting design and a springboard for continuing adventures in faceting.
