METAL CLAY I: FUNDAMENTAL TECHNIQUES
INSTRUCTOR: ANNE ACKER
In this class you will use fine silver metal clay to complete at least four projects of increasing complexity, as you learn new skills. Metal Clay is microscopically ground metal combined with water and an organic binder to hold it together. It is malleable, like typical clay, but once it is fired it becomes solid metal which can be hammered, soldered, and worked like traditional metal. You will start out learning the basics of how to work with the material – rolling, texturing, cutting, and forming it into jewelry items such as pendants, earrings, beads, and rings. Fine silver metal clay comes in a variety of forms – lump, syringe, paper, and slip or paste – and you will incorporate them as appropriate into your designs. You may bring small items that you may wish to make a mold from; there will be materials available for you to make your own personal mold. You may want to bring magnification, such as an Optivisor. Lab fee covers materials to make the first four projects including molding compound to make several small molds, a consumables kit, and the use of the instructor’s took kits. Additional materials will be available for purchase.
Class Fee: $155
Est Materials Fee: $200

Anne Acker
From an early age Anne enjoyed creating handmade objects. In her early twenties she was thrilled to find a local artist who taught her the basics of silversmithing. It was fun, but when she discovered metal clay, she found the medium she enjoys working in the most. She is certified through Rio Grande, PMC Connection, and Art Clay. Anne lives in Jacksonville, Florida, and is very involved with the Jacksonville Gem and Mineral Society, where she is Education Chairperson and Past President, with AMCAW – the Alliance for Metal Clay Arts Worldwide, where she served on the Executive Board. She teaches silver metal clay classes several times a month at the Jacksonville Gem and Mineral Society. She also teaches at The Great Bead Escape Retreat in Live Oak, FL, and has presented at an international metal clay convention.
