WIRE I: WIRE CRAFT FOR JR. JEWELERS (AGES 12-17)

INSTRUCTOR: SANDRA BERGQUIST

This course combines basic information for both chain maille and wire wrap, including information on materials, tools, suppliers and references. Projects will allow students to build skills steadily to accomplish projects of increasing complexity in both wire wrap and chain maille. By the end of the class, students should complete five chains, as well as five wire wrap projects. Additional projects will be offered as time and student interest allow. Students who have taken this course previously will be provided with new projects commensurate with their experience and ability. Aluminum and anodized aluminum jump rings will be used for chain projects while shaped brass, bronze and copper will be used for wire wrap projects. Students must be able to participate in classroom activities without sponsor support and be capable of following the directions of the instructor. Although all required supplies and tools will be available for use during the class, students may bring their own tools and supplies. An Optivisor or magnifying clip-ons are strongly recommended. The class fee covers supplies for proposed projects including all jump rings, beads, findings, wire and cabochons. Wire wrap projects or chain maille projects beyond those planned or those in sterling silver or gold-filled wire can be completed at additional cost consistent with metals prices at the time of the class. You can contact Sandra with questions about this course at slbergquist@cox.net.

Please note:  Sponsors or relatives of a student in this class may take the class with the student.

Bergquist, Sandra
Sandra Bergquist

Sandra's interest in wire art began with a two-hour class in wire wrapping in 2004. When she wanted to go beyond that initial course, she was directed to William Holland. To repay what she has called "The Gift of William Holland", she vowed that, if she ever became good enough, she would teach every chance she got. Consequently, Sandra (who started teaching in 2008) has taught for numerous organizations in a wide variety of settings. In addition to teaching wire and chain at William Holland and to members of her rock and gem club, she is currently providing private lessons while also conducting workshops in her home area. Because her workshops include students of widely varying skill levels and interests, Sandra has become adept at managing groups with multiple, concurrent projects.
