METAL CLAY COPPER & BRONZE: IT’S ALL ABOUT THE BASE

INSTRUCTOR: STARR PAYNE

This class will introduce you to working with Copper and Bronze Metal Clays.  While somewhat more challenging to work with, they create a beautiful contrast to fine silver clay.  Prior experience working with metal clay is not required.  During the course of the week, we will be working with both copper and bronze metal clays, covering basic and advanced design and construction techniques through multiple projects designed for both beginning and advanced metal clay students.  In addition, we will cover the variety of base metal clays, their characteristics, along with firing and finishing techniques.

The class fee includes enough copper and bronze metal clay to complete several projects, such as earrings pendants, and a hollow form design, a base metal tool kit, along with handouts and consumables.  Additional metal clay and materials will be available for purchase and the prices are included in the Estimated Materials Fee.  Students are encouraged to bring an Opti/Visor and a hand polishing tool, such as a Dremel or Flex Shaft.  The instructor will have finishing bits and brushes available for the hand polishing tool.

Class Fee: $200

Est Materials Fee: $25-100

Payne, Starr

I think I have always been a creator. Some of my earliest memories are of making things and always wanting to try the latest art or craft project. In my younger years, I received a BA in Art from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and worked as an exhibit artist at the Milwaukee Public Museum from 1979-1982. Most of my working career had not been in the arts, though I always worked at some kind of art or craft. After moving to Tallahassee, Florida in 1999, I became involved in the Florida Society of Goldsmiths, learning and developing my jewelry making skills. In 2001, I discovered Metal Clay, and it has been the main focus of my metalwork since then. I hold a Metal Clay Certifications from Art Clay Silver, Rio Grande and PMC Connection. While I worked predominately in silver metal clay, I have come to love the Base metal clays of bronze and copper, and they have been the focus of my work and teaching for the past 5 years.  I love to work with Metal Clay, the feel of it, and how it can be textured and shaped into beautiful designs and pieces of wearable art. I continue to be interested in all forms of craft, including enameling, glass fusing and metalsmithing, expanding my knowledge and adding to my jewelry designs. Currently I am teaching Metal Clay classes in Bronze and Copper at the Lafayette Park Arts and Crafts Center and the Florida Society of Goldsmiths Studio in Tallahassee. I have exhibited my jewelry in Milwaukee and Door County, Wisconsin, LeMoyne Art Foundation in Tallahassee, Florida and the Morean Art Center in St. Petersburg, Florida, and my work can be seen at the Wiregrass Artist Cooperative in Thomasville, Georgia, River’s Edge Gallery in Apalachicola, Florida, and at the AHA Gallery in Havana, Florida.
