SILVER II: CREATIVE STONE SETTING FOR CABOCHONS & FACETED STONES

INSTRUCTOR: DEBRA COBIA

There comes a time in every Rockhound’s journey when they muse, “What am I going to do with all these stones?” This fundamental workshop in stone setting may be just the answer to that question. The class is designed for learners with solid torch control who have the ability to direct heat in order to achieve a desired outcome. This is a techniques-oriented class. However, if time permits students may complete at least one piece of wearable jewelry so feel free to bring gemstones you would like to use and may have found challenging to set. The class fee includes materials and stones, for tube, prong, flush, and basket settings, some tool use, handouts, solder, and other consumables. We will also make two setting tools. If you want to incorporate one of the settings in a finished piece, bring your own silver or purchase it from the instructor. A complete materials and tools list will be available at debracobia.com after February 1, 2024.Class participants may expect to develop knowledge and skill in executing the following types of settings: Heavy bezel settings with cut seats for cabochons and faceted stones as well as those with inner bezels, Tube Settings, including how to measure for and cut your seats with special stone setting burs, combination bezel/prong settings for regular and irregular stones, simple basket settings, flush settings.

Class Fee: $200

Cobia, Debra

As a jewelry artist, I use traditional metalsmithing techniques to create wearable art. My work is characterized by clean, uncluttered lines and enhanced by the use of texture and color.  Having lived on or near water for most of my life, I am strongly influenced by the colors and textures found in and around lakes, rivers, and mountains. I currently divide my time between Carrollton, Georgia and Cedar Bluff, Alabama. I am a founding member of the Blue Door Gallery, an artist cooperative in Carrollton.  I am a member of the Carrollton Artists Guild, the Metal Arts Guild of Georgia, and the Florida Society of Goldsmiths. I have been teaching at William Holland for approximately 15 years. Samples of my work may be seen at debracobia.com.
