LAMPWORK II: SOFT GLASS MARBLES

INSTRUCTOR: GEORGIA VAN ZYLE

In this class we will be making marbles with 104 COE glass. No previous experience making marbles is necessary but experience making beads is required unless you have spoken with & are given approval by the instructor. We will start off with a single-color marble to gain familiarity with working off mandrel and using a marble mold. We will make a variety of marbles with increasing complexity as the week progresses. The size of our work will vary but most will be 1” or less in diameter. Larger marbles can be made but take a longer time on the torches in the Lampwork studio. We will make marbles with twists, raking, frit, dichro, murrini and stringer. You will also work on advancing your skills in heat control, shaping, and encasing. Safety in the studio will be reviewed. Didymium glasses are necessary and are supplied by the school, if needed. A basic tool kit is available for student use, but you are welcome to brin your own favorite tools. Magnification may be helpful to you but is not required. Closed-toe shoes and 100% cotton clothing must be worn. The Class fee covers the glass, and other materials for assigned projects and the use of specialized tools, including marble mold. Glass colors that I bring for class may be somewhat limited due to current supply issues. Glass will be provided for each project, but you are welcome to bring your favorite glass with you.
