LOST WAX CARVING WEEKEND CLASS: ORGANIC FORMS
INSTRUCTOR: BRUCE MCKAY                FRIDAY 5PM TO 9PM AND SATURDAY 9AM TO 5PM

In this two-day workshop, students will learn to carve waxes into organic forms. The waxes we will create will be pendants or brooches of flowers or other forms chosen by the students, ready to be cast into metal. We will not cast the finished pieces in this class, just learn how to carve fluid, organic, realistic forms. Flowers or other forms will be hand carved from a solid block of carving wax using basic wax carving tools and each student will take home their kit of carving tools. We will start with a basic five petal Plumeria Pendant design which will teach all the skills to carve organic forms, whether they be realistic or just free flowing designs.

McKay, Bruce

Bruce McKay made his first piece of jewelry in 1969 and decided then that this was to be the art he would follow. He went to the University of Oregon, getting a degree in Art Education. He first began to sell his work at craft shows, then opened a retail store, then ended up with a private studio and showroom where he worked on one of a kind custom piece in Gold and Platinum. Along the way he became a GIA Graduate Gemologist, graduated from Diamond Setting School, became a gemstone dealer, gem cutter and teacher. In 2014 he retired from active work and began to focus on cutting and carving, primarily in Agate and Jasper.
