LAMPWORK II: EXPLORING REACTIVE SILVER GLASS

INSTRUCTOR: GEORGIA VAN ZYLE

The students in this intermediate/advanced class will explore working with silver reactive glass. You will learn techniques to work with both reducing and striking glass. We will be using silver laden glass in rod, frit, twisties, stringer, murrini, and shards to make both smaller and focal size beads. While concentrating on working with silver glass, you will also work on advancing your skills in heat control, working with larger focal beads, bead shaping and encasing. Safety in the studio will be reviewed. Didymium glasses are necessary and are supplied by the school, if needed. A basic tool kit is available for student use, but you are welcome to bring your own favorite tools. Please bring your own mandrels to class. I work in the middle of 12” long, 3/32” diameter mandrels, but you are welcome to use mandrels you are comfortable with. Magnification may be helpful to you but is not required. Closed-toe shoes and 100% cotton clothing must be worn. The Class fee covers the glasses and other materials for assigned projects and the use of specialized tools, including marble mold. Glass colors that I bring for class may be somewhat limited due to current supply issues. Glass will be provided for each project, but you are welcome to bring your favorite glass with you.

Class fee: $125

Est Materials Fee:  $0

Consumables Fee: $15 (applied to WH account)

Prerequisite: Lampwork beads I or other experience at the torch and the ability to independently make a Lampwork bead.
