WIRE III: FACETED STONES, LET’S STEP IT UP!!!

INSTRUCTOR: DIANE MASON

Fear of faceted or small stone? Intrigued by beautiful, faceted stones but wish you knew what to do with them? Well , this class will solve your problems. The main purpose of this class is to make wire students aware of techniques used to wrap faceted stones and become as confident with them as cabochons. But, this is where fun, faceted stones and learning techniques are brought together to excite your creativity. We will start this task by successfully completing a total of at least 12-13 projects all using faceted stones. Shapes to be used are: teardrop, oval, emerald, marquis, trillion and briolette. Each will include a pendant and matching pair of earrings. There will also be an oval faceted bracelet to complete your count of 13 projects. Students may work in sterling silver or gold-filled wire. This class does not use craft, brass, or copper wire. This traditional wire class tends to move very fast. Students must actively wrap a minimum of 6-12 pieces per week and there will not be time to back up and refresh basic wire skills. The instructor will contact 4-6 weeks in advance of class start date. A welcome packet will be sent with a list of wire, supplies, and prices. However, students are asked to obtain their stones for use from the instructor. This allows students to be working on the same size & shape of stone at the same time. The class fee includes syllabus, wrap tape, 14-16 handouts, pen, paper, magic eraser, and sharpie marker. It is important that you read the prerequisites BEFORE registering. Please confirm with the instructor prior to registration if in doubt: 706-379-1718 or email: jimndee43@gmail.com

Class Fee: $60

Est Material Fee: $250-350

Prerequisites: Two structured WIRE I classes of at least 30 hours each, two WIRE II classes of at least 30 hours each, and at least 6 months of active wrapping, completing at least 6-12 pieces per week.  **Wire weave and wire sculpture do not count as your prerequisite classes.

Mason, Diane

Diane began her wire career in 1999 by attending William Holland School of Lapidary Arts and continues to upgrade her skills today with ongoing classes. She is an active member of the Franklin Gem and Mineral Society, the Southern Appalachian Artists Guild, and the Blue Ridge Artists Association. After retiring in 2014 as a critical care nurse specialist Diane and her husband moved to Young Harris to be closer to the mountains and to get serious with their rocks by opening and operating their own rock shop. They travel year round selling their jewelry at juried festivals/shows in several states. This direct link to public sales gives her a very personal approach which enables her to lead her students through a short course in pricing and selling their wares. Diane's teaching background allows her to present courses to her students in a very structured manner. Because she believes students should know why they are doing all of the necessary steps she teaches wire theory as well as a hands-on or "monkey-see, monkey-do" approach. While Diane began teaching at William Holland in 2003, making 2021 her 19th year, she also teaches privately for gem and mineral clubs in six states as well as  at her home studio. In 2014 Diane began doing specialty wire work for both Ruby City Gems and the Franklin Gem and Mineral Society Gift Shop (the old jail) located in Franklin, N.C. Diane enjoys all of her classes whether it is WIRE I, WIRE II, WIRE III (filigree or faceted stones), BRACELETS, or WIRE SCULPTURE. Her favorite quote is "We do not make flea market garbage in this classroom."
