Our perception of the world often seems to be a faithful portrayal of reality. When we see and hear a car driving by we instinctively believe there is actually a car and that we should avoid crossing in front of its path. However, sometimes perception fails to match reality - there was never a car to avoid, only a fabrication of conscious experience. These are cases of illusions, hallucinations and afterimages. This course explores the fascinating gap between reality and perception, examining how the brain constructs our experience of the world and what happens when that construction goes awry.
Sharif Kronemer PhD
Sharif I. Kronemer, PhD is a Research Fellow at the National Institutes of Health studying the brain mechanisms of conscious perception in health and impairment. Sharif was a former graduated student in the Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program at Yale University.
