Ninety-eight percent of Turkey’s current population of 86 million is Muslim, with the remainder comprised of four recognized minorities: Armenians, Greeks, Bulgarians and Jews. Today this Jewish community numbers a mere 15 – 20 thousand. This tiny current community gives little to suggest that Jewish life in Turkey was historically exceptionally vibrant, with a very much larger number of inhabitants. This class will explore that story which is astonishing and fascinating.
Ira Kleinfeld,Eng.Sc.D.
Ira Kleinfeld earned his BS, MS and Eng. Sc.D. from Columbia University. He served as a professor of industrial engineering and associate provost for graduate studies research and faculty development at the University of New Haven where he initiated UNH’s annual Holocaust Remembrance event. He continues to chair the planning committee as professor emeritus. He is still active at UNH, teaching courses, and being engaged in a variety of projects
