F25-12 - Poetry in Our Lives

Class | Registration opens 9/2/2025 9:00 AM

To quote the poet and literary critic Dana Gioia: “Poetry gave humanity the words  to get through life.” We get through life via the multiple forms of poetry including nursery rhymes, songs, rap, hip-hop, opera, even TV jingles. Poetry permeates our culture and affects our emotions through the power of stories, enchantment, the search for truth, and its oral/aural delivery. Jim Romano will talk about the essence of poetry and recite a
selection of poems ranging from Shakespeare to Bob Dylan.

James Romano

Jim Romano earned a PhD in Classical Studies from the University of Michigan. He taught Classics for several years at Michigan and at Lehman College (CUNY). He subsequently entered the nonprofit world as an executive in two major health-related foundations.
