2025 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Joseph Mallord William Turner, the widely admired and possibly the most influential British artist. The remarkable exhibition will showcase the Yale Center for British Art’s rich holdings of Turner's work. This is a two-session course:
Session One - Serena Guerrette, docent at the YCBA, will take you through the paintings section of the exhibition using the close-looking approach to enhance observation.
Session Two - James Vanderberg, educator, will present an in-depth view of the outstanding works on paper from the YCBA’s collection that will be on view in the exhibition.
James Vanderberg
James Vanderberg is the Educator for High School, University and Community Engagement at the Yale Center for British Art. He graduated with a master’s in fine arts from CUNY Hunter College in 2008. Vanderberg has taught university and high school studio art and art history for over a decade at Fordham University, Nassau Community College, the Art Students League of New York, and Saint John’s Preparatory School. His work is collected nationally, and recent paintings and drawings are available at Gallerie Gris in Hudson New York. In 2019 Vanderberg moved to rural Connecticut and left classroom teaching after the pandemic. This new landscape and connection to a historical collection of 17th and 18th century art, as well as the resources of a university museum have influenced his work in surprising ways. When he is not painting and drawing, he creates an ongoing autobiographical comic called Lunch.
