S25-33 Charles Dickens: The Great Novelist and Social Conscience of the Victorian Age
Class | Registration opens 3/3/2025 9:00 AM
Dickens, one of the most prolific and beloved writers of the early to middle Victorian period, will be discussed through five of his most famous works: Oliver Twist [1838]; Nicholas Nickleby [1839]; A Christmas Carol [1843]; David Copperfield [1850]; and Great Expectations [1861]. The course will focus on the nature of some of his most famous and great literary characters, the nature of the social mores of the times, and the tremendous historical importance of the Industrial Revolution. A brief discussion of Mark Twain's novel, The Gilded Age [1870], will illustrate the American parallel to Dickens' works. Thus, the course will be both a literary and historical endeavor.
