The trial and execution of President Lincoln’s assassins took place on what is now Fort McNair, an active military installation that hosts top-ranking administration officials and the National War College. The courthouse has been restored to its 1865 configuration, and the site of the gallows can be seen from its third-floor windows. Join us for an exclusive tour of the facilities, and learn about the arrest, trial, and hanging of the conspirators. Because of its secure location, special access procedures are in place, and the list of participants must be submitted two weeks in advance -- by September 9. Please do not sign up unless you are confident that you will attend.
Registration is required: There is no fee for this tour. Encore Learning membership must be valid through the event date to register. This event is limited to 25 registrants. If the event fills up, there will be a waiting list. If you choose to be on the waiting list, you will be notified prior to the event if space opens up and you will be able to join for this event. Following the tour, we invite everyone to join us for an optional pay-for-your-own lunch.
Directions/Transportation: Grant Hall is accessible to pedestrians and vehicles at a security clearance gate half a mile from Grant Hall. Parking is available on site, but may not be sufficient for 25 vehicles, so carpooling is strongly encouraged. Access procedures will be shared with participants upon request to the coordinator and to all registrants in advance of the event. Grant Hall has restrooms and air conditioning; the courtroom is at the top of two flights of stairs.
