This course begins with an overview of the science of climate change, examining what is changing, why it is happening and the evidence that current trends are primarily driven by human activity rather than natural causes.

We will then explore the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement, including efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C (and no more than 2°C) above pre-industrial levels. With current warming already at approximately 1.3°C, we will consider the potential consequences of exceeding these thresholds, including the possibility of climate “tipping points” and their implications for long-term recovery. Strategies for reducing atmospheric CO2 and reversing temperature increases will also be discussed.

We continue with a discussion of how major countries are responding to climate change, assess progress toward Paris Agreement commitments and examine the challenges that have hindered success.

The final session features an interactive climate solutions exercise using the En-ROADS simulation model. Participants will take on the role of decision-makers, exploring policy choices and their potential impact on the future of the global climate.

Ron Edelstein

Ron Edelstein has 50 years of experience as an engineer working on gas turbines (Pratt & Whitney), solar energy R&D (DOE consultant and senior engineer at the Solar Energy Research Institute working on solar thermal R&D), and natural gas R&D (Gas Research Institute). Since retirement, he has taught energy and climate change courses through the Osher Lifelong Living Institute. He earned degrees in Aerospace Engineering, Engineering Science-Solid Mechanics and Engineering Science-Environmental Science and Technology. He also trained as a “climate ambassador” for the Climate Interactive En-ROADS climate solutions model.
