1067v - Songwriters Gone Too Soon: Lasting Legacies

Virtual Course | Registration opens 9/8/2026 10:00 AM EDT

This class honors songwriters who died too soon, but produced songs of cultural significance. Twelve songwriters will be studied, three each week. We will explore their lives, their early deaths and their legacies, and hear some of their songs performed by themselves and others. They may be gone, but their songs live on.

Session 1: Robert Johnson, Laura Nyro, Phil Ochs
Session 2: Hank Williams, Sandy Denny, Townes Van Zandt
Session 3: Kate Wolf, Steve Goodman, Gram Parsons
Session 4: Sam Cooke, Bobby Darin, Buddy Holly

The instructor will provide links to background information on the course webpage when class begins. Lyrics will also be distributed.

  • This course will be offered virtually via Zoom.


    This course will be recorded, and registered participants will receive a link to access each recording within two business days after the session ends. The recordings will be available for viewing anytime until February 28, 2027. While the recordings are provided for convenience and to accommodate any scheduling conflicts, they are not intended to replace the benefits of attending in real time, where you can ask questions and participate in discussion
Linda MacCleave

Linda MacCleave earned an MA in English education from Virginia Commonwealth University and is a retired teacher. Her appreciation for the inspirational poetry of folk and country music has led her to share the history and interpretation of songs with her peers. She also teaches classes at the University of Richmond and Virginia Tech.
